Snowmen don’t require a lot of snow to be built successfully. However, the more packing snow you have, the bigger the snowman can be. Cute snowmen can be made with just a few inches of good, packing snow.
To build a snowman, you will need the following:
- Snow
- Sticks for arms
- Old hat
- Old scarf
- Carrot for nose
- Small stones or broken pieces of sticks for eyes, mouth and buttons
How to Build a Snowman
To make a snowman, pack snow into a firm snowball. Put the ball on the ground and start rolling it around the yard. Stop and pack the snow firmly onto the ball every few minutes. This will make the ball solid and help it keep its shape. Continue rolling until the snowball is as large as possible. Flatten the top of the large snowball a bit so that the middle of the snowman has a base. This is the bottom of the snowman.
Roll the middle ball of the snowman in the same manner. Make it a little bit smaller than the first ball. Lift the snowball onto the bottom section of the snowman. Pack snow in between the two balls to hold them together and give the snowman stability.
Roll the third ball in the same way as the first two. This ball will be the head of the snowman. When it’s the correct size, lift it onto the middle of the snowman. Pack snow between the middle and top snowballs to keep the head stable.
Poke a hole in the snowman’s face for the carrot nose. Insert the carrot and pack extra snow around it to keep it in place. Use small stones or broken pieces of sticks for the eyes, mouth and buttons. Place branches in the middle section of the snowman for arms. Add the hat and scarf.
Sometimes the hat or other accessories won’t fit properly. Simply remove or add snow to create the proper shape for the accessory. If necessary, use a small piece of a stick as a pin to anchor a hat or scarf onto the snowman.
Snowman Variations
Get creative with your snowman! Use different types of hats to create different characters. A cowboy hat or a Mexican sombrero makes an interesting snowman hat. Add accessories like a broom or shovel. Decorate the snowman with old dress-up clothes. Give your snowman an apron or a hula skirt. Create an entire snow family or snow pets. The more snow you have, the more snowmen you can make!
Winter snowstorms and snowmen go hand in hand. Create a memorable snowman to enjoy until the weather warms up.
